Welcome to Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Music which has a rich history of music. Students are offered instrumental music in grade 9 with a guitar course added in grade 10 and a vocal/songwriting course in grade 11. Co-curricular activities for the band/instrumental students is a major part of school life in which the students may participate. Within each course, the students have the opportunity to play as a band and perform in smaller groups/solo where they select their own style of piece. Students create and hear their own music through computer technology. They will also enter the realm of history and explore everything from the medieval times up to and including pop culture throughout their school life in music at BML.
BANDS: We have great pride in our school’s history of excellence and student participation in our junior concert band and senior tour bands, jazz ensemble, variety shows and musicals. Smaller ensembles are periodically assembled for those students wishing to perform in a specific group. We perform in the community at various times of the year—the Santa Claus parade is a classic—both as the larger band and also as smaller groups within the band.
TOURING OPPORTUNITIES: While we do perform annually at the Musicfest Canada Georgian Bay Regional Band Festival, every 2 years we offer the students a performance tour outside of Ontario. In the spring of 2009, our performance tour took us through Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic. In the past, we have been to England 4 times, New York, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, and British Columbia. We even performed with other professional and university marching bands in the university ‘Varsity Cup’ football finals in Toronto.
LIFETIME MEMORIES: For all music students, each year brings different opportunities, but inevitably, every group has shared life lessons, many memories and enjoyed a variety of opportunitites with their friends.
LIFETIME LESSONS: BML Music is an active place with energetic, dedicated and friendly students. Although their music skills are developed, each student graduates with so much more as a result of their involvement in the courses and co-curricular programs. It’s a real pleasure to meet our music grads many years later enjoying their own careers and hearing of their continued involvement in music outside of their chosen career.
